Las demandas de la vida moderna hacen que se desarrollen materiales con nuevas funcionalidades y para diferentes aplicaciones. Todos estos materiales tienen en común el uso de los elementos de la tabla periódica. En esta charla, mediante la utilización de un material como ejemplo, el vidrio, explicaré cuales han sido los “grandes cambios” a lo largo de la historia viajando en el tiempo y aterrizando en la actualidad. Cada estación nos permitirá recorrer la tabla periódica, sus elementos y las propiedades de los mismos. Llegaremos a la actualidad revisando los aspectos más importantes del desarrollo de los materiales y sus aplicaciones. A la vuelta miraremos con la perspectiva del camino recorrido y con la mirada hacia el futuro.

The demands of modern life lead to the development of materials with new functionalities and for different applications. All these materials have in common the use of the elements of the periodic table. In this talk, through the use of a material as an example, glass, I will explain what the "great changes" have been throughout history traveling through time and landing today. Each station will allow us to go through the periodic table, its elements and the properties of them. We will come to the present reviewing the most important aspects of the development of materials and their applications. On the way back we will look at the perspective of the road we have traveled and with our eyes on the future.
